Salesforce simply explained for the family
If, like me, you’re a technical-functional consultant, you’ve probably already seen your family and friends frown at the mention of your job!
The world of CRM, and Salesforce in particular, is indeed rich in acronyms, complex terms and abbreviations. With flexible and constantly changing working conditions, it’s hard to explain the complexity of our role in simple terms.
Don’t worry, here are a few tips on how to popularize this fabulous universe.
3 tips for simplifying technical jargon
- Keep it simple and concise
Summarize your work in a few words. This will capture your audience’s attention:
“My job? Consultant on a tool to manage customer relations.” - Translate
Customer Relationship Management? No sir, no ma’am, we’re talking about Customer Relationship Management here. - Find the right analogy
Tailor your speech to your audience. Here are a few examples: - For motorsport fans:
“Salesforce is like a Formula 1 car. I make sure it’s running at 100% capacity and, if necessary, make adjustments to improve its performance.” - For hiking enthusiasts:
“If Salesforce is about hiking, I’m about maintaining the trails. My job? To make sure that the route to the summit is well marked, clean and optimized for reaching the top quickly.” - For fans of 80s French singers:
“You see Patrick? Well, I’m the ice cube in his aperitif, keeping him fresh and fit a little longer before he starts talking nonsense on social networks.”
Well, this one may be less certain…
Not recommended ⛔
- Don’t wait until the end of the aperitif
If it wasn’t clear before, it won’t be any clearer afterwards. - Avoid franglais
Talking about flows, permission sets, consulting, or customer relationship management is the best way to lose your audience, even the most polite of your aunts… - Don’t get bogged down in the details of your daily tasks
What happens on Jira, stays on Jira. Keep it simple!
“I’ve created a record-triggered flow” becomes “I’ve automated the sending of e-mails.”
“I imported records via inspector” becomes “I’m a data recovery wizard.” 🧙 - Too much detail kills detail
If your cousin tells you about his plans to convert to eco-responsible farming, I doubt he’ll give you the full list of treatments for his vegetables. Well, the same goes for Salesforce! There’s no need to detail your certifications or the X clouds per vertical. An overview is more than enough 😉
Congratulations, you now have all you need to impress your family with your craft!
